We all know that it's easy to pack on a few pounds around the holiday season...there's so many events centered around food (parties, cookie exchanges, tailgates). But, this year, how about you convince the family to participate in a little friendly competition and signup for a local race? Here’s a family-friendly roundup of some great Thanksgiving season runs in the Lexington area perfect for getting the whole crew moving (and earning that pumpkin pie!).
The Gobbler Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Date & Time: Sunday, November 23, 2025 at 8:30 a.m. in West Lexington.
Why it’s great for families:
- Multiple distances: half marathon, 10K, and 5K — so you can pick what fits your crew.
- Scenic horse-country setting at Mereworth Farm (719 Dolan Lane, Lexington 40511) — nice change of pace.
- Shirts, medals, and fun atmosphere with DJ and free race photos.
Tip for families: For younger kiddos you might want to stick to the 5K (or just walk together). It starts early so you’ll still have plenty of time before Thanksgiving dinner.
2. Thoroughbred Classic 5K
Date & Time: Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2025 at 9:00 a.m.
Why it’s great for families:
- Held at the beautiful Keeneland Race Course (4201 Versailles Road, Lexington 40510) — scenic and memorable venue.
- Open to runners and walkers; younger kids (age 9 and under) get special finisher medals if they complete under their own power (no stroller) in the kids category.
- Late morning start gives families a chance to ease into the day and still make it back for holiday-meals.
Tip for families: If you’re bringing a stroller or a dog, note: there is a special $5 untimed bib for each stroller/dog and they must start behind runners.
3. Castlewood Youth Turkey Run
Date & Time: Saturday, November 22, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. registration / races about 9:45 a.m.
Why it’s great for families:
- Specifically for youth (ages under 18) with different age-group distances (each less than a mile) — perfect for younger kids or first-time runners. =
- Free to register (nice for families!) and a fun community event at Castlewood Community Center (210 Castlewood Dr., Lexington KY 40505)
Tip for families: Arrive by 9:30 a.m. to register and get ready. Great option if you just want something low-key and fun for the kids before the big day hits.
✅ Family Planning Tips
- Register early: Many races have early-registration discounts and guarantee shirt sizes.
- Pick the right distance: Little ones might not want a full 5K; the youth run or walking the 5K are great options.
- Dress in layers: November mornings in Lexington can be chilly. A light jacket for warm-up and then peel it off when you’re moving.
- Stroller & dog rules: If you bring a stroller or a dog, check if you need a special bib or start position.
