Local Spotlight: Sims Kids Boutique Childcare

A Fresh Approach To Early Learning in Lexington

By Hannah Rivera, Publisher & Editor of Macaroni KID Lexington October 2, 2025

At Macaroni KID, we love celebrating local businesses that make a difference for families. This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Sims Kids, a new and innovative boutique childcare and playroom studio in Lexington, dedicated to creating a nurturing environment where children can learn, grow, and thrive.

Founded by Abby McKay, Sims Kids Boutique Childcare stands out by blending high-quality early education with the personalized feel of a boutique-style setting. Abby shared with us how the center came to life, the values that guide it, and why families across Lexington are embracing this unique childcare option.

MK: What inspired you to start Sims Kids?

Sims Kids was inspired by my own experience as a mom of three. I often wished there was a flexible place where I could book childcare in advance, drop my kids off for a few hours, and know they were engaged in something stimulating outside of our home. I also longed for a space where parents could connect while their children played together. Sims Kids grew from that need- a boutique, play based studio designed to give families the flexibility, enrichment, and community I always wanted (and still want!) for myself and my children.

MK: Tell us about what Sims Kids offers and how it’s different from typical daycares or play centers.

Sims Kids offers flexible boutique-style play sessions, themed camps, and private celebrations for young children- with no year round commitment required. Parents can book in advance, knowing their kids will be engaged in stimulating, creative activities while receiving the highest quality care. We're here to fill the gap between full-time daycare and large play centers by offering a boutique, play-based space that's both flexible for parents and exciting for kids.

MK: Where is Sims Kids located, and what is your schedule?

We're located at 513 E High St, in the heart of Lexington's Woodland Arts District. Right now we are in a soft launch phase, offering a limited schedule of play sessions and pop-up events. The idea is to be as flexible and responsive as possible- catering to what the community truly needs. Our full time schedule isn't set just yet- we're taking this season to learn what works best for families and make sure Sims Kids grows in a way that supports them most.

MK: What ages do you serve? Is this for toddlers, preschoolers, or older kids?

Sims Kids is intentionally designed and curated for little ones between 12 months and 5 years old - the stage where play, exploration, and socialization are so important. That said, I know families don't always fit neatly into one age group, so I can be flexible in younger or older siblings when it makes sense. I believe mixed ages can be really beneficial- the younger can learn by watching the older ones, and the older kids build confidence and empathy by helping the younger, It creates a natural, family-style environment that feels both fun and enriching for everyone.

MK: How does pricing work? Are there packages or flexible options?

Yes, Sims Kids was built to be flexible for families, so our pricing reflects that. Parents can book individual sessions if they just need occasional care, or they can purchase bundles that make it easier to plan ahead and save. We also offer generous sibling discounts, because I know firsthand how important it is for families with multiple children to have options that are affordable and realistic. The goal is to give parents the freedom to choose what works best for their schedule without the pressure of long term contracts or year round commitments.

MK: What’s been both the most rewarding and most challenging aspect of launching Sims Kids?

The most challenging part of launching Sims Kids has definitely been balancing it all while still being the full-time caregiver for my three young children. But in many ways, that challenge has been my greatest gift and reward- this business is truly built and dedicated to them. I wanted to create the very best place for my own kids to grow, play, and thrive while also creating something that can support other families in our community, It's been deeply personal work, and seeing my children thrive in the very environment I dreamed up for them makes it all worthwhile.

MK: What should families know before their first visit?

Families should know that my top priority is safety and creating a space where kids feel comfortable, have fun, and can truly just be kids. We provide all the activities, materials, and plenty of engaging play so parents do not have to worry about a thing. With our small groups, little ones get the attention and adjustment time they need to feel at ease and quickly dive into the fun.

MK: What future plans or expansions do you hope for Sims Kids?

In the future, my vision is for Sims Kids to expand into even more flexible options for families- the kind of high quality care you can book around real life without the rigidity of traditional models. At the same time, I want to keep it boutique and personal, always responsive to what families in our community truly need. My dream is for Sims Kids to be a joyful, lasting resource for families here in Lexington.
